Another youngster
An immature White-tailed Eagle, presumably a first-year bird?
Apart from the eagles, upstream at Yakumo there were also Japanese Wagtail, Brown Dipper, Eurasian Jay, Crested Kingfisher and a few common tits and woodpeckers….
Take off
A young Steller’s leaving its perch…
Some youngsters
Although the eagle season seems destined to be a bit disappointing again it was heartening to see quite a few first (and /or) second year Steller’s Sea Eagle..
Another returnee
This (male?) White-tailed Eagle has been returning to the same spot in Yakumo for many years now…and he’s pretty tame too.
Not much else around in Yakumo on Friday: the most interesting species was harlequin Duck. We don’t normally see them here but there were at least 4 around including this first winter male upstream…
Some Steller’s
Blizzards in Yakumo a couple of days ago…
Fewer eagles than normal (but slightly better than last year) and another poor salmon run (but again slightly better than last year)…
Another poor eagle season?
There were some eagles around in Yakumo yesterday but not so many. Very low numbers of salmon again this winter: it’s not looking good. How long will they stick around?
Swirling blizzards most of the day, the above Steller’s flew over in a short gap of clear skies.
Some rivermouth gulls
There were 8 or 9 gull species at the rivermouth in Yakumo the weekend before last…including lots of kittiwakes.
And the various winter gulls…
A Dipper
No eagle photos from Yakumo last week but here’s a bird I don’t often photograph. Brown Dippers are common on rivers all year but are normally birds of the shade.
Autumn here
The resident Slaty-backed and Black-tailed Gulls have been joined by some others. Lots of Vega Gulls last weekend as well as these 2.
There were also Whooper and Bewick’s Swans, various ducks, lots of Great Egret and this lone wader.
Upstream there were a few salmon (but not many: hope this just means they’re late) and the first eagle of the season. Crappy pic but always nice to see the first one.
Sanderlings down low
I grabbed a buoy from the beach to sit on and get some low(ish) shots of the Sanderlings…
Next year I may try to lie down…
Some juvs
There were 3 juvenile Sanderlings near Yakumo a couple of days ago…
