Very wet/windy/blizzardy the last 2 or 3 days. LOADS of Common Gull on the coast…
Apart from the gulls it was pretty quiet.
I was checking out a harbour but there were a few crossbills in the pine trees nearby so I couldn’t resist.

On the nearby coast there were a few winter gulls, lots of Black-necked and Great Crested Grebes, a few common ducks, some Greenshank and 1 or 2 White-tailed Eagles.
The various gull winter visitors were present at the rivermouth in Yakumo last weekend..
A very cold icy start to the year saw us heading east. A few small birds were around including Asian Rosy Finch and 3 Rustic Bunting.
Usually in this area there are lots of Black-legged Kittiwakes at this time of year but not this winter. Gulls were surprisingly thin on the ground: a few Glaucous-winged and this lone Common Gull being the only vaguely interesting ones.
Other stuff around included Pelagic Cormorant, Brent Goose, Harlequin Duck, Peregrine, Red-breasted Merganser and Eastern Buzzard.
A very windy day today after a lot of rain yesterday.
Not many birds around, the above Diver was still on the river to the west of town and there were lots of Common Gull at the river mouths and in the ports too.
A Slavonian Grebe west of Hakodate yesterday. It was the first time in a while I’d been out that way. Nothing especially noteworthy: Black-necked and Red-necked Grebes, lots of ducks and gulls, a lone Common Redpoll, a group of 9 Great Egret………
The Scallop boats were busy in the harbours and there were a lot of Gulls waiting for handouts………..
