Don’t think I’ll be back in that spot this winter…
When we got back to Hakodate I randomly snapped this from the car window…
A crazy winter for finches…

I wish they foraged in some nicer looking spots…
I wonder which mountain tops they go back to in spring?
The Japanese name is ‘Hagi-Mashiko’…so we call them ‘hags’ for short…
Hagi is a kind of purple flower BTW.
Amazing what food they can find in the filthy gutters of the port…
They don’t always perch on boxes…
I’ve been using bursts with the Electronic Shutter exclusively for a while now. A lot of similar shots, as you can see here…
Ahem.
Think this is a female.
They like perching atop the wooden boxes scattered everywhere in the port…
The Asian Rosy Finch flock I saw at the end of last year was still on the coast but its numbers had greatly thinned. At first we could only find one (the above male) so I took a walk on the nearby grassland (changing from the 500 f/4 used above to the 600 f/11)…
There was the grand total of ONE Common Redpoll (plus a few gulls and crows). Luckily the redpoll was tame.
The 600 f/11 is a viable lens in such bright conditions.
It was as cold as ever as Sawara. There could have been anything about on the coastal grasslands but the icy wind beat us back.
I wonder what other small birds will turn up in the next week or 2?
