Also in the park were 3 species of woodpecker, Narcissus Flycatcher, Oriental and Common Cuckoo but sadly not any interesting migrants.
Although the regular summer visitors are interesting enough…

Although the regular summer visitors are interesting enough…
Yesterday Narcissus Flycatcher and Eastern Crowned Warbler were around in the park just outside town, as well as Pale Thrush, Wryneck and all the usual stuff but not many photo opps. Pretty quiet compared to 2021 and 2022 in this location and at this time.
The above Olive-backed Pipit was nice to see and there are always the common species like Russet Sparrow. This is a sparrow species that stays high up in the trees…
And the very common Masked Bunting…this ringed male was in exactly the same corner of the park last year.
Grey skies and grey birds this morning…
Finally at eye level…
And it had found a home for its family this spring…
These are usually high up in the trees but this one stayed fairly low for a while…
Some of the commoner birds in the park this morning…
Russet Sparrows are summer visitors and are usually high in the treetops…
A quiet end to Golden Week saw us nearer town……………..
This injured Brent Goose was being hungrily eyed by crows. I chased them off but it wasn’t there today.
There were lots of Russet Sparrows in the park.
The common urban sparrow in Japan is the Eurasian Tree Sparrow. This fills the same niche as House Sparrows do in Europe. Tree Sparrows in Europe are more birds of the woods and Russet Sparrows fill a similar niche here. Confused?
Anyway it’s not a species I often photograph.
It was a dark drizzly start to the day but there were lots of birds in the park………….
These are 2 species I don’t photograph so often. The sparrow tends to spend most of its time in the treetops and the woodpecker always seems to fly off before I’m ready.
