Rubythroats still seemed reasonably common around Kiritappu.
And there were plenty of Reed Buntings too.
A long day trip #1
I went north with a friend and we checked out a site north of Sapporo. We were looking for Brown Shrike but couldn’t locate any. There were lots of other commoner birds around at least, like this Reed Bunting.
North Hokkaido 2019 #4
There were 3 or 4 singing Common Reed Buntings at Omusaro. This is a species we get down near Hakodate and of course is also common back in the UK. They do seem especially tame in north Hokkaido though…………
East Hokkaido 2019 #3
Some other commn birds from Kiritappu. Common Reed Buntings were singing all over the place and up above Pacific Swifts were hawking……….
Offshore were Specatcled Guiilemot and Rhinoceros Auklet, several White-tailed Eagles were in the area and the usual common Hokkaido summer birds like Siberian Stonechat were present.
Latham’s Snipe were displaying above our campsite and at night you could hear the strange calls of Laech’s Petrels coming ashore……………
