I could sneak up quite close to it but it was very skittish.

A wet Osprey
This Osprey was in the same spot as the Crested Kingfishers…
1000mm on a dark rainy day
I got the 2X teleconverter out of the bag. Not something I often use…
Most of the shots were of the male. This one is the female. Damn twigs…
And together…
A scarce one
Only my 2nd ever Eurasian Curlew in Japan…
Of course I’ve seen loads of them in the UK but in Hokkaido it seems pretty uncommon. Eastern Curlew is the ‘default’ one here.
A Crested Kingfisher
A bird I see fairly often but never get to photograph.
Handheld at 700mm out of the car window on a dark rainy day.
Some midday Geese
There were some geese at Yakumo at the weekend…
Shame about the light.
Way home in the rain
It was raining all the way home…we stopped at a few spots.
A flyby
Not a vintage winter for the eagles but there’s still always the chance for a nice BIF or 2…
Bird of the day was a Rough-legged Buzzard (possibly 2 actually) but too far off for any photos. Hopefully there will be a bit of an influx of them…
The eagles will have to do for now.
Too far away…
Well this one wasn’t…
No eagles at all upstream at Yakumo but there were some some near the river mouth. And one of them actually got a salmon…
Just a bit far off for photos though.
Another dark eagle
Sometimes I forget to toggle crop mode on/off…
This individual flew right towards me but for some reason I was in crop mode and most of the really sharp photos cropped off most of its wings…
Very dark again: ISO 3200. Rarely go above 400 for BIFs.
Here it is in a tree a bit later when the light was better.
A noisy eagle BIF
Just after sunrise, ISO 3200…
Another youngster
An immature White-tailed Eagle, presumably a first-year bird?
Apart from the eagles, upstream at Yakumo there were also Japanese Wagtail, Brown Dipper, Eurasian Jay, Crested Kingfisher and a few common tits and woodpeckers….
