I just can’t escape geese: this lone straggling White-front was in parkland atop a cape!
The Ospreys have returned…not great pics it has to be said.
And near my apartment all the snow has gone…
Other birds around on Monday in the Esan area were Glaucous-winged Gull, Harlequin Duck, lots of Brent Goose and a lone White-tailed Eagle.

As stated before, White-fronts constituted the vast bulk of the geese flocks.
But they weren’t alone…

Most of the geese at Mukawa were White-fronts. 000’s of them.
Before I came to Japan I had only seen this species once!
The weather improved on the third afternoon and suddenly lots of geese arrived from the south…
Geese were the main target for the trip. On the first day in Mukawa there were hardly any around: the fields were still covered with snow. Most of the geese either hadn’t arrived yet or were waiting on some nearby waterways…
We managed to find a few White-fronts scattered around.
The geese were still there when we went home…
They flew off and were chased (unsuccessfully) by a White-tailed Eagle but came back…
3 stragglers from the huge flocks of geese that visit Japan in winter. Almost all of them are in northern Honshu or further south now. But not these 3…
On the second say we couldn’t get near the Snow Geese…
They are very easy to pick out among the Grey Geese, as you can see here:
Greater White-fronted Geese are generally the most numerous species near Hakodate but this is not the case in Urahoro. Here are some adults and juveniles together.
