2 Peregrines were around on Sunday, an adult (above and below)…
And this juvenile…
We stopped at the Japanese Green Pigeon beach on the way back and pigeons and Peregrine were still around………..
The Peregrine eventually nabbed a pigeon only to lose its prize…
The pigeons attracted a Peregrine…………………
It’s the season to see juvenile Peregrines along the coast. This one was bothering the waders near Yakumo. Shame about the lighting………..
This roadside juvenile Peregrine had just killed that unfortunate juvenile Black-tailed Gull………………..
This Peregrine was atop an old lighthouse…………….
We were in Esan on Monday. Mountain Hawk-Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Steller’s Sea Eagle. Glaucous-winged Gull and Harlequin Ducks were all around but not a great day for photos although the above Peregrine posed nicely.
This Eurasian Jay was also pretty tame………………
The first eagle photo of any winter is always nice to have even if the photos in early to mid November are rarely any good. There were about 40 or so eagles of both species upstream at Yakumo but all high in the sky or on inaccessible stretches of the river.
A lot of common stuff around but nothing spectacular. Not a vintage day for photos either.
Beautiful clear autumn weather the last few days and a clear change in some of the bird species. Harlequin Duck and Glaucous-winged Gulls gave reappeared on the coasts.
A flock of Whooper Swan were flying south yesterday as were lots of Eurasian Jay. Lots of common ducks on the rivers and Great Egrets are becoming more numerous. Northern Goshawk and Daurian Redstart were other noteworthy species near Esan.
Hakodate is pretty quiet: a flock of Rustic Bunting were in one of the local parks today and There are still some Night Herons on the river.
And the Esan area always seems to have a Peregrine…………..
We were watching 2 very active Peregrines on the west coast today, difficult to get any keeper shots as it was so windy.
I was hoping the wind would have wafted a Hoopoe over but no such luck. A big flock of Crossbill, lots of Great Egret but not much else of note.
The cape near Esan is now snow free. Which meant it was easy to see this Peregrine…………….
