Often we get mixed flocks with both waxwing species but this time there was only one…
Tag: Bohemian Waxwing
Early
There was a flock of about 30 or so Bohemian Waxwing in town today.
Terrible light and crappy backgrounds though.
They usually don’t arrive until mid to late January (in the years they do come)…
More out of town Waxwings
They’d been there for a week and their numbers had grown……………….
Wonder if Hakodate will get another influx?
2020: a Waxwing Year
2020 will go down in history for other more important things but here in Hokkaido one thing I’ll remember is the number of Waxwings. From late January to late February and again in late November/early December. Loads of ’em.
These ones in Yakumo were not as tame and easy to photograph as the ones near my apartment last winter.
More Sunday Waxwings
The mixed waxwing flock was still in Yakumo and the numbers had increased: well over 100 now.
The weather was not good: dark and snowing most of the time.
The blue in the background is not sky: just the wall of a building………….
Some more early Waxwings
There was quite a big flock of waxwings in Yakumo last weekend. Most were Japanese Waxwings…………
But there were a few Bohemians mixed in too…………….
There were also a few Crossbill around. Waxwings and Crossbills both had huge invasions into south Hokkaido last winter so I wasn’t expecting to see either of them much this time round.
Surely the end?
Some Waxwings from last Friday. Surely the last ones of the winter?
Back to Kindergarten
One of the Waxwings was in the playground of a local kindergarten.
It found a few berries on the ground………
The kindergarten seemed closed but a foreigner apparently taking random photos may have seemed a bit odd to any passers-by so I didn’t linger long.
Still straggling
The 2 Bohemian Waxwings were still around on Friday.
Amazingly I haven’t got bored with them yet.
Although I am well aware the world doesn’t really need any more Waxwing photos from Hakodate.
Stragglers
I thought they’d all gone……….
But obviously they haven’t. These 2 Bohemian Waxwings were near my apartment this morning.
The last last last ones
They were in town for almost 5 weeks. Great while it lasted.
The last last ones
Waxwings get thirsty……….
And they hit the roof…………
