I could sneak up quite close to it but it was very skittish.
Only my 2nd ever Eurasian Curlew in Japan…
Of course I’ve seen loads of them in the UK but in Hokkaido it seems pretty uncommon. Eastern Curlew is the ‘default’ one here.
The resident Slaty-backed and Black-tailed Gulls have been joined by some others. Lots of Vega Gulls last weekend as well as these 2.
There were also Whooper and Bewick’s Swans, various ducks, lots of Great Egret and this lone wader.
Upstream there were a few salmon (but not many: hope this just means they’re late) and the first eagle of the season. Crappy pic but always nice to see the first one.
There were a few Dunlin on the beach in Oshamanbe…
Whether these were part of the small wintering flock there or others just passing through I don’t know.
I grabbed a buoy from the beach to sit on and get some low(ish) shots of the Sanderlings…
Next year I may try to lie down…
There were 3 juvenile Sanderlings near Yakumo a couple of days ago…
There weren’t many waders in Mukawa but on the way home the flock of Sanderlings near Oshamanbe was in their usual place.
And the Kentish Plovers from last week were still around.
A change from the usual stints and sanderlings….
Some plovers were on the beaches yesterday…
Pretty quiet near Hakodate yesterday…but a few waders were on the beach.
