Common Reed Bunting

Some other commn birds from Kiritappu. Common Reed Buntings were singing all over the place and up above Pacific Swifts were hawking……….

Pacific Swift

Offshore were Specatcled Guiilemot and Rhinoceros Auklet, several White-tailed Eagles were in the area and the usual common Hokkaido summer birds like Siberian Stonechat were present.

Siberian Stonechat

Latham’s Snipe were displaying above our campsite and at night you could hear the strange calls of Laech’s Petrels coming ashore……………

The commonest?

Siberian Stonechat

Siberian Stonechats (sometimes split as Stenjeger’s Stonechat) are one of the commonest summer visitors and on the grasslands they are abundant at this time of year.

Siberian Stonechat

The young have just left the nest and the adults tanely sit atop bushes and reeds watching over them. Very easy to photograph………..

Blue Rock Thrush

Blue Rock Thrush

A male Blue Rock Thrush to the west of town yesterday. Summer is starting and just the breeders remain now. Other noteworthy species around included Kentish Plover and a few Rhinoceros Auklet close inshore chasing the sardines. Not quite close enough for any decent photos although one did pop very briefly nearby the port.

Rhinoceros Auklet

Otherwise just the regular summer stuff around: Reed and Chestnut-eared Buntings, Oriental Reed Warblers and lots of Siberian Stonechats.
