I never tire of watching them poke around in the quiet corners of a beach……..

An afternoon with the Stints
I spent 2 or 3 hours on a local beach sat on a discarded buoy with a very tame flock of Red-necked Stints…………….
I was hoping to find a Little Stint among them but failed.
Back near Hakodate
Lots of Stints near Hakodate too…………
And the other common passage wader……………
Tripping over Stints
The juvenile Red-necked Stints showed almost no fear……………a lot of shots were ruined because it was too close to focus.
I tried to get some Sand Martin pics: there were lots of them flying around. Very tricky. This was the best of a bad bunch.
Ubiquitous
The ubiquitous east Asian wader…………
Just like old times……….
A few years ago in August and September I often used to hop on a train to a beach to the west of town and look for waders. In recent years I have neglected this spot a little (and when i did visit it seemed there wasn’t much there) but today I took the train out there…………..
There was a flock of 30 or so Red-necked Stint, 3 Black-tailed Godwit, several Common Sandpiper and lone Grey-tailed Tattler, Terek Sandpiper and Little Ringed Plover. Nothing earth shattering but a pleasant afternoon on a deserted beach.
Some more Stints
By far the commonest small wader, Red-necked Stints are everywhere in August………..
This tame flock were mainly juveniles I think.
Some Stints
We found some very tame Reed-necked Stints in the corner of one of the ports…………..
There were about 30 or 40 of them with a lone Dunlin.
The quietest of quietest months
July is always a quiet month in south Hokkaido and for various reasons July 2021 has been even quieter than usual.
It’s been really really hot too. Last Sunday it was foggy in the morning which provided temporary relief. Not great for photos but juvenile Ospreys were practicing fishing and the first of the ‘autumn’ waders were passing through.
A quiet wader season
2020 has been a bit quiet for waders although my laziness means I probably missed a few interesting ones.
Red-necked Stints are still ubiquitous and are as common as ever. There were about 10 on the beach at Yakumo as well as 2 Sanderling and several Mongolian and Kentish Plovers.
Another quiet week
Another quiet week just gone by.
At Yakumo today there were a couple of interesting waders: a Teminck’s Stint and a Green Sandpiper. I don’t have any decent shots of either and they were both so jumpy I couldn’t get any today either.
On the beach there were a few Sanderlings and the ubiquitous Red-necked Stints.
A grey humid drizzly Sunday in mid-August
Not a great day for photos yesterday but a few waders around at Yakumo: a dozen or so Red-necked Stint, 2 Terek Sandpiper and single Whimbrel and Grey Plover.
The stints are the default small passage wader in Japan and are very common in this season.
