Loads of ’em in the gloom under the conifers…

Still still here
Lots of Common Redpoll still in Hakodate yesterday. Only a few seem to be adult males though.
Far fewer crossbills but they’re still here too…
Last of the Rosy Finches
Don’t think I’ll be back in that spot this winter…
When we got back to Hakodate I randomly snapped this from the car window…
A crazy winter for finches…
Alone again
I left it to have the grassland to itself…
More redpolls in the snow
As you can see there was some fresh snowfall on the coastal grasslands…
Alone
The only passerine in a big wide open space…
Everywhere
Wow these are common this winter…
Another finch weekend
The Asian Rosy Finch flock I saw at the end of last year was still on the coast but its numbers had greatly thinned. At first we could only find one (the above male) so I took a walk on the nearby grassland (changing from the 500 f/4 used above to the 600 f/11)…
There was the grand total of ONE Common Redpoll (plus a few gulls and crows). Luckily the redpoll was tame.
The 600 f/11 is a viable lens in such bright conditions.
Very local winter wanderers
Not quite as tame as the ones further downstream…
More lingerers
Another winter invader that’s been around a while in 2023/4…
Discharged
I just spent a few days in hospital following surgery…
I felt well enough to take a little walk on a fine sunny Sunday afternoon. There were lots of redpolls around…
More birds on the river
I was checking the crossbills mainly but there were other birds around…
