There were a couple of crossbills in the tiny park yesterday but it was dark and raining and with the RF 600 f/11 I was at ISO 6400. Amazing what AI denoising can do (these were with Lightroom’s version; I also use Topaz Denoise sometimes).
The holdout
Only 1 crossbill seen since last Saturday; this male holding out in the tiny park.
Single Dusky Thrushes are scattered around everywhere now.
A bit skittish
Still quite a few around but a tad jumpy…

The first day of spring 2024 but the birds near my apartment this morning hadn’t changed much although there seem to be far fewer of them…
When will it end?
When there are no viable cones even on the floor I guess…

More xbills in and out of the shadows
Hopping in and out of the shade…
Dining on the floor
They exclusively grab cones off the ground now.
A Monday afternoon
There were 6 or 7 crossbills in the small park near my place yesterday…
And very tame again too.
How common of you
The White-winged Crossbill was on the fringes of a small flock of Common Crossbill. The slightly larger Commons were bullying it a bit and driving it off pinecones…
