It snacked on ants for a couple of minutes…

Golden Week 2024 #9
Lots of this species in the park, the ‘other’ sparrow here in Japan…
Unlike the abundant urban-dwelling Eurasian Tree Sparrows the sexes in this species are different.
Golden Week 2024 #8
Some ‘birdscaping’ from yesterday…
Golden Week 2024 #7
In the park outside town yesterday morning there was a tame male Grey-headed Woodpecker…
It flew down to grab some ants…
Golden Week 2024 #6
Not a bird I see very often here…a flock of 6 oystercatchers…
A pair of Garganey was also about but otherwise a touch quiet in the west of town.
Golden Week 2024 #5
I took many 000’s of photos of this species these last few months but not many with my 500 f/4 lens…
Golden Week 2024 #4
Not a vintage morning for photos but the park was full of birds…
Dusky, Japanese and Brown-headed Thrush, Narcissus Flycatcher, Eastern Crowned and Sakhalin Leaf Warbler, Wryneck, Grey-headed Woodpecker, Latham’s Snipe and lots of Russet Sparrow.
And the usual common stuff…
Golden Week 2024 #3
Early morning in a park just outside town…and a few crossbills were present.
I had my big lens this time.
Golden Week 2024 #1
A sedate start to Golden Week, don’t think I’ll be doing too much this year.
So this is what they eat when they run out of pinecones…
Quiet just west of town today; Vega Gull, Red-breasted Merganser, Gadwall, Russet Sparrow, Little Ringed Plover, Chestnut-eared Bunting…and this small flock of crossbills…
Passing through
There were 3 of these, presumably stragglers from the big flocks. Also Gadwall, Mandarin and various other common ducks and several species of gulls including these 2 looking nice in summer plumage.
Tap turned off
Some one turned the tap off; no more crossbills or other interesting birds near my flat anymore…
The last 2 days saw beautiful weather with a few birds around west of town. I was waiting for a Red-necked Grebe in summer plumage to come close. It didn’t but some of its common relatives did.
Some B/W Monday shots
It was a grey Monday. But the Ospreys are back; I’d seen several already the previous week before this one flew over low.
Sometimes the ports are full of Black-necked Grebes in summer plumage in March. Not yet this year. And there were only 2.
