The Black-winged Stilts were in a small padi in Onuma and surprisingly tame…………
More overshoots
There were 3 Black-winged Stilts in the padis near Onuma yesterday.
This species doesn’t breed in Hokkaido as far as I know but it is regular visitor in spring and is always nice to see.
Some ducks passing through
Shovelers are a (slightly) scarce but regular passage migrant here so it was nice to find six of them at Onuma this afternoon.
White-naped Crane
A surprise visitor near Onuma and a lifer for me: a White-naped Crane.
This is a well-known winter visitor in southern Japan but is pretty rare in Hokkaido.
The other grey goose
The thousands of White-fronted Geese at Onuma were very dramatic but there were also smaller groups of Bean Goose too.
More flocks

Cackling Geese
Not great photos but you can see the Cackling Geese in amongst the White-fronted Geese in these pics……….
There were at least 3, maybe 4 of them.

Some flocks
The big goose flock was still near Onuma yesterday.
I wanted to get some Cackling Goose pics (there are a few in among all the White-fronted Geese). You can see a couple resting here (the ones with the black heads and white cheeks).
They weren’t the only flocks around that location. Lots of swans of course but also this group of 100 or so Common Redpoll.
A foggy morning in Onuma
On Monday morning we went back to Onuma to check the huge geese/swan flocks.
But it was foggy……………
Some of them were resting on the lake.
Also around were lots of ducks including large numbers of Pintail, 2 Steller’s Sea Eagle, 1 White-tailed Eagle, several Great Egret and a pair of Japanese Wagtail.
The American
Whilst it didn’t turn out to be the very rare Trumpeter Swan, the American race of Tundra Swan was pretty interesting to see.
