The last of the White-fronts…
Late Winter Trip 2022 Day 5 #10
We were able to relocated the 2 Snow Geese but they were a little far off and the light was brutal: white birds on hazy warmish sunshine over snowy surfaces.

I only saw 1 Bean Goose (Taiga I think) amongst the main flocks in Mukawa. There was a flock of them a few miles east but they were impossible to get close enough to photograph.
There were also quite a few swans. Not photogenic in the harsh spring sunshine. Mainly Whoopers but I found at least 1 Bewick’s.
The nearest I could get to a comparison shot:

More cacklers…

As geese go, Cackling Geese are pretty cute.

As stated before, White-fronts constituted the vast bulk of the geese flocks.
But they weren’t alone…
Late Winter Trip 2022 Day 5 #5
Day 5 was very bright and sunny and the fields were still under snow, at around midday I gave up taking photos for a while as the light was way too harsh (a problem at various times on this trip). I was also a little tired of White-fronts…
At this time 2 Snow Geese decided to fly over, these shots were massively overexposed.

A low-key rainy afternoon with the geese, not many photos survived the cull from this day.

A lot of to-ing and fro-ing going on…

In amongst the White-fronts were small groups of Cackling Geese.
This is an increasing winter visitor to Japan from the Aleutians.

Most of the geese at Mukawa were White-fronts. 000’s of them.
Before I came to Japan I had only seen this species once!
