They were still there on Thursday………….
The flock was mainly Japanese Waxwing but there quite a few Bohemians too.
The easiest way to tell them apart is the colour of the tail tip (red in Japanese, yellow in Bohemian) or the yellow stomach of the Japanese which is very conspicuous in flight……….
I saw a flock of 8 Waxwings in town today. 3 Bohemian (above) and 5 Japanese Waxwings (below).
I didn’t either species last year but 2 years ago there were loads of them. I wonder what the rest of winter will hold?
A Bohemian Waxwing in town last year. There was a big influx of both species and they stuck around a while giving lots of photo opps, hundreds of them. But Winter 2018/2019 has not provided a single Waxwing amywhere near Hakodate. At all.
