Seems to have been something of a ‘flocking’ winter in Hakodate – whether Waxwing, then Brambling now Crossbill. Never seen the latter so close up in the UK, usually ones or twos height up in conifers…really exotic colouring too. Don’t suppose you have the Common v Parrot v Scottish ID issues in Japan?!
Hi Tony, yes it has been a great winter for small birds and the crossbills (like the Waxwings) are right on my doorstep. We only have the one species here so no ID stress……………
