600 f/11 is good for flock shots!

More redpolls in the snow
As you can see there was some fresh snowfall on the coastal grasslands…
Boxed
They like perching atop the wooden boxes scattered everywhere in the port…
Alone
The only passerine in a big wide open space…
Everywhere
Wow these are common this winter…
Another finch weekend
The Asian Rosy Finch flock I saw at the end of last year was still on the coast but its numbers had greatly thinned. At first we could only find one (the above male) so I took a walk on the nearby grassland (changing from the 500 f/4 used above to the 600 f/11)…
There was the grand total of ONE Common Redpoll (plus a few gulls and crows). Luckily the redpoll was tame.
The 600 f/11 is a viable lens in such bright conditions.
What else?
It was as cold as ever as Sawara. There could have been anything about on the coastal grasslands but the icy wind beat us back.
I wonder what other small birds will turn up in the next week or 2?
A male
This male came nice and close…
Yet more small winter birds
It’s been a great early winter for irruptive passerines. There was a flock of 60 or so Asian Rosy Finch on one of the nearby coasts…
Lots of these
Some of the common birds that seem to be everywhere this autumn…
Also around are flocks of Brambling and Siskin as well as a flock of Bohemian Waxwing. And lots of Eastern Buzzard.
Some teleconverted ducks
Some more softish 400 f5.6 plus 1.4X T/C shots…
Harlequins at 400
The bare 400 f5.6 was not so bad for BIFs. Not as good as the 500 of course but a lot easier on the shoulder…
