Oriental Reed Warbler

Oriental Reed Warbler

Oriental Reed Warblers are common summer visitors. There used to be 9 or 10 singing males on the river near my aprtment but I’ve only heard 2 this year (and they seem to have disappeared): more victims of the City tree felling policy I assume.

This bird was on the west coast today.

  1. Kyoto also has a riverside tree felling policy Stuart. Osaka doesn’t so it’s always easy to tell when you’re crossing the border into better bird habo.

    1. Hi Neil, I was told it was due to flood risk ie if the river swells up the trees may get uprooted and ‘dam’ the river downstream…………….not too sure about that to tell the truth.

  2. Passage migrants and winter visitors for us in HK. They appear to be very loyal to particular sites – years ago birds ringed at Mai Po turned up in the same patch of reeds in Japan (Honshu, I think).
